Microsoft: Windows 7 has option to turn “On” or “Off” a number of features, not just Internet Explorer

You will not only get the option to turn "ON" or "OFF" Internet Explorer in the latest builds of Windows 7, but will also get the options to disable a number of features of the operating system. That's what Microsoft disclosed on Friday, last week.

In a blog posting on Friday, Microsoft stated that its latest Windows 7 will offer the users not just the option to turn "ON" or "OFF" IE, but will also offer the option to turn "ON" or "OFF" a number of features of the OS.

Microsoft stated that the option to turn "ON" or "OFF" a number of features was not part of Windows Vista, but will be part of the final version of Windows 7. The features that the users will be able to turn "ON" or "OFF" in Windows 7 include Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, Windows Search, the XPS Viewer and several others.

Microsoft wrote, "If a feature is deselected, it is not available for use. This means the files (binaries and data) are not loaded by the operating system (for security-conscious customers) and not available to users on the computer. These same files are staged so that the features can easily be added back to the running OS without additional media. This staging is important feedback we have received from customers who definitely do not like to dig up the installation DVD."

However, Microsoft declined to comment on if the company has introduced the option to turn "ON" or "OFF" a number of features in Windows 7, due to pressure from the European Commission, before which antitrust case is going on against the company for illegally bundling its Internet Explorer with its operating systems.
