Euthanasia Campaigner Asks for Banned Drug

Recently, Philip Nitschke, a Euthanasia Campaigner has requested the federal health authorities to supply the banned drug- Nembutal.

The whole issue came into lime light when six of the patients who suffered from cancers and motor neuron illnesses, demanded that they need the drug because they wanted to use it as a tranquilizer.

However in 1950s, US used the drug as a sleeping tablet but due to some health issues, a directive from Australia's Customs and Border Protection in March, warned patients against the importation of Nembutal and banned the drug and in Netherlands and Switzerland; many patients, used the drug to end their lives.

Defending all the claims, which said that the drug was not good for health, Nitschke quoted that for securing a peaceful sleep and peace of mind, the drug was very effective. He further added that due to lack of peaceful sleep, these patients suffered from numerous medical nightmares.

He added, "It really seems to lift and elevate people's mood and we suspect it actually prolongs life if you've got access to the drug because obviously there's going to be a considerable degree of suspicion because I am the applicant on their behalf”.

On the other hand, he also announced that if the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) denies access to the drug, he would mull over legal avenues.
