Kaiser Family Foundation has revealed the national average monthly premium per person was $215, though it varied from place to place, as it was $437 in Massachusetts and $136 in Alabama.
The foundation analyzed the data by Mark Farrah Associates to verify last year’s average premiums for individual health insurance in the US.
The foundation stated that the findings from the study of the data included insurer filings and the offerings of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners for consumers and policymakers to measure the affordability of health insurance before the realization of national health reform in the year 2014.
The premiums vary from state to state, as a few states have established the national reforms which will facilitate the people to buy coverage with the existing health conditions. However, some of the states support the people to deny the coverage due to its expensive nature.
According to the foundation, “Other reasons for the wide differences in premiums include: an area's cost of living, health care costs, demographics and regulatory requirements, along with plans' benefits, cost-sharing structure and effectiveness of cost-control measures”.
Due to the Affordable Care Act, the 2014 reform will ensure that the insurers will not be able to reject coverage for pre-existing conditions and will not be able to charge people with higher premiums.
