Genome Institute of Singapore’s Executive Director Dr. Edison Liu has been named as the President and CEO of the Jackson Laboratory in the US.
The revelation about the appointment of Dr. Lui comes at the same time when the research that evolved around the concept of connection between the genetics of human and mammals was made public.
Dr. Lui has a strong profile with a career of 25 years in this field and he has held the position of a Scientific Director at the National Cancer Institute's Division of Clinical Sciences in Bethesda, MD. He has also worked as a biomedical researcher at various research centers in the US and Asia. Dr. Lui will be commencing the office at Jackson Laboratory by January 2012.
At the Jackson laboratory, Dr. Lui will be working in the section that deals with the researches that are carried out on mice for diseases occurring in humans. The institute constitutes of millions of genetically engineered mice that are used for biomedical researches. The laboratory has plans to develop its centres in Europe and Asia.
As per Dr. Lui, “[Jackson Lab officials] understand that another market is arriving, and that’s in Asia. They wanted someone who is familiar with Asia. We need to look at markets where there is a need”.
