Nearly 8,080 packages of Vita Classic Premium Sliced Smoked Atlantic Nova Salmon have recently been recalled over concerns that the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause terminal infections in children, the elderly, as well as people who have weakened immune systems.
The smoked salmon - manufactured by the Chicago-based company, Vita Food Products – had been sold at Meijer stores in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio; and at Publix stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
In addition, the Vita Classic Premium Sliced Smoked Atlantic Nova Salmon was also sold at Safeway stores, Vons stores, Genuardi's stores, and Winn Dixie stores in some states; and also at stores in Pittsburgh, Buffalo, N. Y. and northeast Ohio.
On the recalled packages of Vita Food product’s smoked salmon, the ‘sell by’ date and code is: DEC 15 2011 01961B.
Revealing that the recalled product had been sold throughout the country, Vita Food Products said in a Friday statement that there has thus far been “no confirmed illnesses or complaints” reported by customers.
Nonetheless, adding that the salmon was recalled due to possible contamination, the company also said that it was “closely monitoring the situation.”
