World AIDS Day – let’s unite

HIV is spreading its fangs each and every year.  HIV is a long term condition, in which the patients have to face consequences of not only the disease itself, but also of discrimination in the society.

According to UNAIDS, about 33.2 million people suffer the drudgery of living with the disease. The number includes 2.5 million children who are suffering from the disease. About half the numbers of HIV patients contact the disease before they attain 25 years of age and die before they are actually 35.

1st December is celebrated as World AIDS Day since 1988. It is a day to raise funds for combating the deadly disease. It is also marked for making people aware of the disease and creating an environment where the patients can live fearlessly without any kind of prejudice from other people.

To commemorate the World AIDS Day 2008, the Pitt Men's Study at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health is organizing a multi-faith service at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Heinz Chapel.

The occasion will be marked by the presence of spiritual leaders from various religious traditions who have been working on behalf of people living with HIV. They would lead prayers and remembrance of lost family and friends and  those living with HIV/AIDS.

The service is free and open to the public from 7:10 p.m.
