It appears that Palm and Sprint are still evaluating the Palm Pre against the iPhone. Well, they are very cautious about revealing the details about the Palm Pre, which is said to be the potential iPhone killer.
In a Webcast hosed by Palm and Sprint on Thursday, the two partners discussed the upcoming launch of the Palm Pre, and caustiosly disclosed some details about the phone. Interestingly, much of what they caustiosly disclosed about the phone is already known to people.
Palm and Sprint revealed a few details about the Pre smartphone and webOS that were announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. The two companies provided no information about the Palm Pre's price and release date, however they stated that the first half of the year is their target to release the the Palm Pre on the market.
According to the two companies, the Palm Pre will be released with multiple service plans. The individual monthly plans will start at $69.99 and will go up to $99.99. The Pre users will be able to sign up for family plans and business plans.
Matt Crowley, product line manager of Palm, demonstrated some features of operating system, including the most interesting one, "Synergy" that aggregates a user's contacts across various Web services into a single interface.
Crowley disclosed that with the Palm Pre, a user can search the handset and the Internet from the home screen.
Crowley disclosed why Palm picked Sprint for the Palm Pre. He stated that Sprint was picked because of its large 3G footprint, data plans, and the ReadyNow program.
Without disclosing many details, Crowley declared that the company is planning for an over-the-air application store for distributing programs. Based on Web standards like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, the platform is aimed to give Web developers an easier way to make mobile apps.
