India lacks in providing the people with proper form of psychiatric counseling, this is why, and the nation witnesses a huge number of suicides. Also, the issue throws light on the scarcity of skilled psychiatrists in the nation.

A recent report on the mental health standards in India revealed that 4 crore of the population of the nation suffers from some form of mental illness. Also, provision of proper psychotherapy to the mentally upset people could result in saving at least one fourth patients from committing suicide.

According to Arpita Anand, a psychologist the nation comprises of a population in billions and in comparison to this the number of psychiatrists practicing in the country is just 4,000. In the wake of Mental Health Awareness Week, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has notified the issue to the Medical Council of India (MCI).

According to the sources, around 15% of the medical problems in the country exist due to metal illness. Also, there are not sufficient care providers in the nation, for every 1,000 patients there is one nurse. Apart from scarcity of trained psychiatrists, there exists another problem that is uneven allocation of the mental health professionals across the nation.

As per Dr. Rajesh Sagar of AIIMS, "Stigma is attached with psychiatry both in people and medical fraternity. People don't want to take up the course".
