Australian pharmacists’ Pharmacy Guild has again caught amidst controversies over the allegations that it received monitory aid from Pfizer, America-based pharmaceutical agency, for promoting its drugs. This is not the first time when the activity of the Pharmacy Guild has caught the eyes as earlier as well the pharmaceutical firm was in controversy because of its deal with Blackmores.
It has come to light that Pfizer paid $7 in the form of administration fee for prescribing its drugs. The deal was struck between the two in the month of July. Health critics are of the view that the pharmaceutical firm is trying to boost its profit without even considering the health safety of the patients.
Concerned over the consequences of the deal, the pharmacists’ union is asking to call off the deal. It has been informed by the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers’ Chief Executive, Chris Walton that as per the deal stuck by Pfizer and Pharmacy Guild, information regarding the promotion of certain drug is provided through computer system.
Echoing the concerns of many, Chris Walton said, “Instead of delivering better patient outcomes, this just aims to stuff more money into the pharmacy guild”. As per the deal, Pfizer is provided with details regarding mobile number and email address so that it could provide vulnerable information regarding its products.
As per the deal, last year as many as 10 million prescriptions were filled for Pfizer's cholesterol-lowering blockbuster Lipitor. Moreover, patients were asked to subscribe for Pfizer drug for a year. Those patients who have subscribed for the drug are being provided with free cookery book and weekly health care updates.
The mode of promoting Pfizer products is being criticized by the health experts who are of the view that the health of patients is being neglected by the pharmaceutical agencies.
