Donated Breast Milk Supply Falls Short of Demand
Donated Breast Milk Supply Falls Short of Demand

It's happening for the first time in the US that donated breast milk banks are running out of supply. Demand has been increasing by manifolds with every passing day.

One of the donated breast milk banks, Mother's Milk Bank, which is in San Jose, publicized that they were running so low on the supply of milk that had to cut down the demands of many hospitals. But its head, Pauline Sakamoto was of the view that they do not feel good about the fact that kids would not get enough milk.

Pauline said he has been managing the bank for last 12 years, but he has not seen such cut, but nothing could be done as they are running low on supply. The bank supplies as much as 420,000 ounces of breast milk to hospitals and the percentage has always grown only in last 37 years.

There are many other banks as well like Mother's Milk which supply human milk to families and hospitals in critical conditions like child is born premature, he needs human milk to remain out of danger.

The banks have to supply milk to distant places like Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, Maryland, Idaho and Wyoming, and therefore the problem of shortage is coming. Pauline was of the view, "The problem that we're facing is that we have a lot of kids that need milk. The preterm infant rate is not going down, and doctors are prescribing it more prolifically. And the milk's just not coming in".

It is for the first time that banks have been witnessing such increased demand from hospitals. There is no doubt in the fact that there is increase in the amount of donation but, it is for the first time that supply has fallen short before the demand.

It seems that more milk banks at remote places needed to be set up.
