As revealed by a recent statistical report, there has been the death of as many as 780,000 people in the past 10 years due to earthquakes. This means that the earthquakes in the past ten years have been more gruesome than the other natural calamities that have plagued the world.
Earthquakes have accounted for 60% of the deaths caused due to natural calamities in the past 10 years.
Besides the deaths, earthquakes have ruined the lives of millions of people across the world. They destroyed the life of people in Haiti in the year 2010 January. It was a monster and claimed the lives of as many as 316, 000 people. Another deadly tsunami and earthquake hit the Indian Ocean in the year 2004. It saw the death of as many as 227000 people in all.
Those who survived were left with as life worse than death. They had to live every day, knowing that they had survived their dead parents, or wives or children. They faced torment day and night with no food and shelter.
Investigations have also shown that the number of deaths increase after a couple of days of the disaster as mnay people tend to succumb to their injuries incurred in the ordeal. Some die due to the epidemics that tend to spread after these calamities, and some, due to sheer sorrow and shock.
Children and the elderly are the most vulnerable groups in these conditions, be it physically or emotionally.
It is strange to see how man falls helpless in these natural disasters. Lives cannot be saved, despite technological advancements and fiercely developing world, God seems to remind people time after time who’s boss and who always will be!
