Similar kind of effort that was being taken out in India, where internet services were made less expensive to increase the online presence of Indians, same efforts has been levied by the Federal Communications Commission in the US.
Commission has calculated that there are approximately 100 million Americans, who do not access internet due to the reason that it does suit their pocket. But, with a motive of increasing their online presence, not only the commission would make it less expensive but would also take out ways, which would make those Americans realize that internet is an important tool.
Draft work has already been done by the Federal Communications Commission. In their next meeting, they would announce that all the US big cable companies would now supply connection for $9.99 a month. It should be noted that scheme is only meant for people who are yet to buy the connection and not for those who already have it.
The commission has termed it the biggest effort so far in order to merge the digital divide. It becomes all more special as the scheme is not rolled out on the bass of the government funding, but due to the collaboration of big private companies.
In order to make it sure success event, the commission has also involved nonprofit groups, who would inform the uses and benefits of internet, making them agree to have an internet connection at their place.
FCC Chairman, Julius Genachowsk said, “We can make a real dent in the broadband adoption gap”. Both the problems that the government feels as reasons for non-availability of internet in about one-third of American households would now get solved. First was an expensive plan, which would be solved by economic internet pack availability, and second was lack of knowledge, which would be solved by the NGO.
