"We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked”, said the head of online gaming giant Valve, Gabe Newell, while warning users that some hackers have spoiled its Steam forums on Sunday night.
In addition, Gabe Newell has also notified that the hackers have successfully accessed the company databases as well as to very confidential customer information such as user names, hashed and salted passwords, email addresses, game purchases, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information.
Gabe Newell has claimed to acknowledge no evidences that can depict any misuse of credit cards, although he suggested users to monitor their activities closely and emphasized that up till now only a few forum accounts were observed to have any impact. Further, the gaming giant has also hailed the users to immediately change their passwords in order to prevent theft of their accounts.
Simultaneously, he insisted that till now, authorities have not recognized any compromised Steam accounts and further notified that the company is looking forward to introduce a change of Steam account passwords that are totally different from forum passwords.
While commenting on the issue, an expert from the security firm Sophos, Paul Ducklin marked it a matter of concern to pinpoint that there are several companies that tend to encrypt credit card information as per the law.
Further, he insisted that there are several companies, especially those which are PCI compliant, have treated the fulfillment randomly without much botheration.
Before this, the company locked its web site's forums earlier this week. The move raised a number of questions regarding the hackers’ attack. Now, the latest announcement has hailed users against the recent attack.
