TIA Could Lower Life Expectancy

Strokes are always considered as deadlier and life threatening but when it come to mini strokes or transient ischemic attack (TIA), that is the time when people need to take a note of it. It has been revealed by the researchers that a person who had experienced TIA has lower life expectancy.

A recent study conducted by the researchers of New South Wales has found that 5% of the patients hospitalized after being affected with TIA had just 20% chances surviving after nine years of experiencing TIA. The findings of the study have recently been published in the Journal American Heart Association.

Transient ischemic attack is mini stroke in which the blood circulation to brain halts for short period. However, often patients take the symptoms of TIA lightly. The symptoms of TIA include numbness, dizziness, vision difficulty and difficulty is speaking.

It is important to note that the symptoms of TIA and brain stroke are similar. Therefore it is advisable that patients should seek medical aid. While commenting over the finding of the study, the study author, Dr. John M. Worthington said, "What this data tells us very plainly is that if you have a TIA, you have greatly increased risk of death, particularly if you are over 65".

A patients affected with TIA can be cured by surgery and by drugs. However, a person can prevent oneself from being affected with TIA by keeping a tab over the blood flow of the body and overweight. Control over smoking and weight can prove helpful in preventing TIA.

Elders above the age group of 65 are at higher risk of succumbing to death after coming contact with TIA. Therefore, they are being urged to follow healthy lifestyle so that TIA could be prevented. Prevention is always better than cure!
