AMD ‘Bulldozers’ Into War of the Server Chips

"Zurich" is the name that has been assigned to AMD's next-generation Opteron 3000 server processor which has made it possible to extend AMD's reach into the 1U server space. The next name that the company has announced about in its statement of Monday is of "Interlagos," which it has assigned to the delayed server chips, earlier known as Opteron 6200.

As per company's details, Opteron 3000 is among AMD's most important additions because the processor has extended AMD's reach to the high-volume 1U server market. But, we definitely cannot say that AMD's Interlagos lack anywhere behind because this high-end chip is AMD's strong tool to directly compete against Intel's E5600 series.

AMD earlier placed its Opteron 6276 against the Intel E5640 with the price difference of hardly $14 among the prices of the two chips in which AMD's performance advantage was 89 percent.

Supporting something similar view of the company, Mr. John Fruehe, the Director of Product Marketing for Server and Embedded Products at AMD, wrote in one of his blog posts that: "When you drive past [a] car dealership, you'll always see the fancy red sports car prominently displayed. It draws people in - it's what the car dealers purposely put there for you to view and think about. But what vehicle do people drive out of the dealership parking lot with?".

He explained further that the technique is absolutely same in the server market as well because here also the server buyers want to get most of their money as any other car buyers because although Porsche is the fastest car, we see more Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys in a tech-savvy city like Austin.
