Survey: Expensive cell phone plans are vexing US consumers

The expensive cell phone plans are vexing US people in the present time of growing economic worries! According to a new survey, released on Thursday, the US cell phone users are considering switching over to the cheaper options, abandoning their expensive cell phone plans.

According to the survey conducted by Opinion Research Corporation (ORC) for the New Millennium Research Council (NMRC), 19 percent of the surveyed US cell phone users have already abandoned their expensive cell phone connections in reaction to the current financial crisis.

The surveyors surveyed 2,005 adults ages 18 and older via their landline phones and found that two in five Americans are planning to discard their contract-based cell phones, if the economy continues to exasperate.

The survey states that 39% or about 60.3 million consumers are likely to reduce their mobile phone expenses if the economy continues worsening over the next six months. According to Washington, D. C. based organization NMRC that conducts surveys largely for telecommunications companies, the findings of the survey indicate that the US consumers are planning to switch over to cheaper alternatives such as prepaid cell phones, or text messaging and Internet for communication; some may go for landlines, giving up their cell phones.

Allen Hepner, an NMRC scholar, said, "The era of cell phone penny pinching is officially here. There is clear evidence that most consumers will keep a cell phone during this recession, but only after shifting to less expensive cell phone plans, such as prepaid, and also by scaling back on cell phone extras including Internet connectivity and texting."

Saving money by using prepaid

So many people can save substantial amounts of money by looking at their cell phone spending with a critical eye. Bloated and restrictive cell contracts should have been a thing of the past long ago. Yet people still fall for the fancy phones with all the bells and whistles, signing two year contracts for a service they could be paying less for if they went prepaid. My prepaid is working extremely well for me and in the last year I saved roughly $450 with NET10 compared to the year before while on contract.
