Increased junk food trend is already known to cause a number of negative impacts on the health of a person. An analysis of available data has indicated that tempting and attractive advertisements have played a role to catalyze the popularity of these unhealthy foods.
Consequently, the Green has decided to introduce some positive changes in the existing broadcasting and communications rules to the Senate as an attempt to minimize the adverse impacts of these promotional activities on children. In addition, they have suggested imposing a strict ban on various junk food advertisements for at least three hours on school mornings as well as from 4pm to 9pm on school nights.
In addition, experts have also hailed the Junk food advertisers for not advertising their product to children, especially during popular television programs. However, the government as well as the opposition has rejected the Green’s efforts for introducing a ban on junk food advertisements. Besides television, the Greens have also insisted to ban these advertisements through email or SMS.
“The Parents’ Jury are supportive of the bill being put forward by the Greens leader, Bob Brown to curb the amount of junk food advertising children are exposed to”, added a member from the from the Parents Jury, Corrine Langelaan, while expressing support to ban these junk food advertisements and tagged the ban as a positive step to combat childhood obesity. Simultaneously, several other public health groups including the Heart Foundation have also supported the ban.
Corrine Langelaan expressed disappointment that sophisticated marketing campaigns have harmed the efforts of parents who are putting their hard efforts to make their kids healthier.
On the other hand, it has been reported that several renowned Junk food manufacturers including Subway along with other Quick Service Restaurants such as McDonald’s and Dominos have expressed enthusiasm for improving the health and nutrition of their products.
