The presence of carbon monoxide in the atmosphere led to hospital admission of seven Chicago northwest residents on Thursday night. It has been informed by the Fire Department that carbon monoxide was infused in the atmosphere by a resident of West Roscoe, who was using an indoor grill at home.
People affected with the polluted air were taken to West Suburban Medical Center and Our Lady of Resurrection Medical Center. On Thursday, the weather was quite rainy and mild rain was felt. Due to rainy weather, the spread of carbon monoxide in the region was reduced.
It has been informed that the quantity of carbon monoxide, which caused injuries to people, was around 1,200 parts per million. According to the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the presence of carbon monoxide can be harmful if it is more than 50 part per million.
During winters, people like to light woods and use fuel to burn heating equipments. Sometimes, smoke produced by the heating equipments emits harmful gasses which can have dire consequence over the health of people.
Therefore, the concerned authorities have urged people to install carbon monoxide detectors at their places and to get their furnaces checked every year. A person infected with carbon monoxide may show symptoms of flu.
The best way of detecting harmful levels of carbon monoxide is detectors. A person can get detector installed at his home for a cost of $30 only. Don Konkle, from Pennsylvania Fire and Emergency Services Institute, informed that the symptoms of infection caused by carbon monoxide are not detected easily. “Often times, people don’t immediately think that carbon monoxide is the problem. They go to bed thinking they’ll feel better and never wake up”, said Don Konkle.
