AT&T and T-Mobile’s Merger under Scanner

In the month of August, AT&T and T-Mobile refrained from the merger by the legislative bodies. However, the companies are hopeful that in the February’s antitrust trial, they will get the permission to go ahead with the merger.

While disallowing the merger, the legislative bodies said that the merger would be anticompetitive. It has been suggested that for the merger, AT&T should sell off 40% of its assets to its rivals. T-Mobile has also been suggested with the same. One of the companies has to sell of its assets so that competition in the market is maintained.

Moreover, the companies should sell of their assets to their rivals and not to others like Verizon. If the companies are not interested in selling off its assets to their rivals then they could sell it to foreign companies but not in companies like Deutsche Telekom, which is increasing its investment in the United States.

It is not informed yet as whether or not AT&T would strike a merger after compromising with its assets. It seems like there are many obstacle in the way of the merger of AT&T and T-Mobile. Meanwhile, it has been reported that América Móvil in Mexicohas expressed interest in buying the T-Mobile assets.

Looking at the scenario taking place in the path of the merger, it seems like AT&T and T-Mobile would be seeking aid of some other agency which would create fewer obstacles in its aim. The two companies are looking determined in going for the merger.

However, before they get permission of merger, both the companies would have to go through the scrutiny of the U. S antitrust regulators and the Federal Communications Commission. It is not sure as to when the merger would be announced. Both the companies are keeping their fingers crossed and hoping that it will happen soon.
