Obesity is constantly increasing its spell among people of all ages. The growing junk food culture has served as catalyst for stimulating the figures. A review of available health data has pinpointed the obesity epidemic, claiming that obesity has grabbed a number of children under its spell.
The recent case of an extremely obese eight-year-old boy, who weighed 219-pound, has pushed authorities to revive their implemented policies for controlling the situation. During the last three decades, the country has witnessed a three-time increase in the number of children tagged overweight or obese.
“Even under the best conditions, it is not always possible to maintain significant weight loss in these children”, explains Sigman. “It is going to take years to get that child well”, notified an expert from the Loyola University Medical Center, Chicago. He is working as Director of Adolescent Medicine along with being an Associate Professor of Pediatrics.
According to a report compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 12.5 million children, 17%, aged between two and 19 years, can be categorized under obesity. Further, experts from the CDC defined obesity among children and notified that any child having a Body Mass Index of more than 95th percentile for children of the same age and gender is considered under obesity, whereas overweight is defined as a BMI of the 85th percentile or above.
The co-author of a latest report, Dr. David S. Ludwig, an expert from the Harvard University, has recently notified that more than 2 million children across the United States are living with higher than normal BMI. He emphasized on the need of some efficient policies in order to address the issue effectively at earliest.
