Modern families believe that cereals are the best way of beginning morning but, only a few of them know that cereals contain a large amount of sugar which could be hazardous for our health.
A recent study, conducted by the Environmental Working Group, has revealed that most popular brands of cereals and cookies of the US contain higher amount sugar. For the study, the Group analyzed contents of 84 most popular brands of cereals.
The Group informed that about one-fourth of the cereals contained adequate amount of sugar. However, the rest of cereals had higher levels of sugar. According to the guidelines set by the Interagency Working Group on Food Marketing, cereals should not have more than 26% of added sugar by weight.
During the study, Kellogg’s Honey Smacks, Post Golden Crisp and General Mills Wheaties Fuel were the brands having high amount of added sugar. The study was conducted in response to the Government’s proposed plan of bringing changes in marketing guidelines with the hope of reducing obesity cases among kids.
In US, obesity is the common problem among kids. From time to time, the Government has been introducing several methods to curb. But, there is more needed to be done. The popular kids’ food like juice, cereals, snacks and desserts are severely being scrutinized by the Interagency Working Group.
Environmental Working Group concluded the study, saying: “Most parents say no to dessert for breakfast, but many children's cereals have just as much sugar as a dessert …Simple-to-prepare, healthy breakfasts for children can include fresh fruit and high-fiber, lower-sugar cereals. Better yet, pair that fruit with homemade oatmeal”.
The group recommended intake of Ambrosial Granola, Go Raw, Kaia Foods and Nature's Path Organic food products which have low calories, adequate minerals and nutrition. It is hoped that people will follow the guidelines of the researchers and will bring a change in their breakfast.
