The CEO of Hewlett Packard (HP), Meg Whitman announced that the company is planning to make the webOS code an open source. While commenting upon the decision of the company, Ms. Whitman said, “We are so excited about webOS and realized that the very best thing to do is to open source the technology, contribute to it and invest in it. We will harness the power of the community to make this a better alternative to other operating systems”.
The announcement was made today and the same moment, the HP asked its developers, partners, HP engineers and other hardware manufacturers to deliver the new version of WebOS directly into the market.
However, the decision will be implemented and come to effect in 2013. However, for 2012, HP is keeping its date fixed for Windows 8 tablet. Ms. Whitman’s colleagues noted that the performance of HP is improving under the leadership of Ms. Whitman.
It has been informed that by making the WebOS as open-source software, the HP would be able to witness two outcomes. Its first outcomes would be that its popularity would increase by manifolds and other side its sponsors might reduce in number.
The most favorable outcome of it is the first one, which would lead to improvement in the software as many think-tanks would be suggesting changes and improvements. The WebOS was acquired by HP last year for $1.2 billion. However, HP’s then CEO decided to do away with WebOS and the mobile devices it powered.
But it was Ms. Whitman’s decision to review the company’s decision. For weeks meeting was held over it and today the final decision has been announced. HP is optimistic about the decision taken by the company. It is hoped that HP will continue to perform well in future as well under the leadership of Ms. Whitman.
