UK Medical Experts Call For Minimum Alcohol Price
Alcohol-Price

There is a direct link between alcohol affordability and levels of harm, said 19 medical experts. They want ‘pocket money prices’ should be abolished and its place should be taken by their suggested reform which calls for ‘minimum price for alcoholic beverages’.

This means to narrow down the gap between the prices of alcohol that is available in the bars and showrooms. The prices should be hiked and it should not be available below the cost price.

The letter signed by the Royal College of Physicians, the British Medical Association and the Royal College of Nursing and others have been sent to the government. If prices would be hiked overall then alcohol harms would also decline.

The UK Prime Minister David Cameron has also taken some measures to prevent his country from becoming west wild place. From April 2012, alcohol would not sell below its cost price in England and Wales.

If alcohol prices are hiked than more than 10, 000 lives could be saved in the UK, said Professor Sir Ian Gilmore from the Royal College of Physicians. He further affirmed, "It's not just about damage to individuals who drink too much but their children and unborn babies and the victims of alcohol-related crime. The most effective way of targeting the heaviest drinkers is probably through a minimum unit price”.

If the current price of alcohol is compared with 1980s price then one would be able to know the vast difference. Alcohol has gone 44% cheaper now, revealed the signed letter. This is the most effective method till date the government could have ever got but it depends on them either to work on it or not.

If the government is not ready to take up this step then MPs should continue with their alcohol taxation plan. It is a workable measure to reduce the alcohol consumption.
