Scotland Chief Medical Officer’s sixth annual report on the nation’s health has put forth mixed results about improvements on medical front. Sir Harry Burns said they have succeeded in bringing down death numbers caused due to cancer, heart disease and stroke.
Still, lots of improvements are needed on aspects like obesity, poor diet and alcohol consumption. These three problems are really taxing for the country and have put Scotland at the back in comparison to other European countries.
There is no doubt that efforts have been made by the government and its positive effects could also be seen in those areas. Smoke-related illnesses have also found declined by 7% among 16 to 6o year olds.
Dr. Burns said, “Several programmes and policies have been introduced in Scotland in recent years aimed at improving health and wellbeing in Scotland. Some have proved effective. Smoking-related illnesses, for example, are declining and the gap in incidence between rich and poor is narrowing”.
Now, the main focus should be on improving diet of citizens as well as to making them aware that alcohol does no good to them. It seems like effective planning is necessary to tackle problems like obesity, poor diet and alcohol consumption. The issue is not limited to one part of the country but in fact, it is evenly distributed across the country.
The Scottish Health Survey has revealed that alcohol consumption among men has increased from 43% to 45% while women seem to have realized its ill effects. It has been found that women have reduced their alcohol intake from 37% to 33%.
Less exercise, unhealthy eating and binging on alcohol have made Scottish people fat. Increasingly, they get vulnerable to diseases. It is vital for them to understand the fact that healthy eating and regular exercise is necessary for them.
