Scotland Short Of Foster Carers, Reveals FNS

The Fostering Network Scotland revealed that there is extreme shortage of foster carers and in order to avoid crisis, thousands of foster carers would be needed by the end of next year.

The organization is facing a lot of problems, which are acting as hurdles for them to move further. Some of them being increased demand of foster carers as now people have recognized that children could do better under their supervision.

This factor has led to increase in the number of children under foster carers. There has been 33% increase in the number of children living with foster families in Scotland. Average age of foster parents has also increased. Some 10 years back, foster carers was not more than 46, but now it is 54 years.

The Director of the Fostering Network Scotland (FNS), Sarah Lurie, cleared that if more families would not come forward to be foster carers then there is great possibility that children have to suffer. According to their data, about 4,700 children live with foster carers across Scotland.

Some of the problems which children could face due to shortage of foster carers are they could be placed with unsuitable foster carers, children could be separated from their siblings, they have to travel long distance in comparison to their other school friends and to stay in children's home due to shortage of foster care homes.

Lurie said it is not that Scotland people do not have potential to become good foster carers, but for some unknown reasons they refrain from taking responsibilities. Some of the foster carers revealed that whenever they talk to their friends to take this responsibility, they do not come forward either by saying 'I couldn't do that because I could never give the child back', or 'I'm not good enough'.

Anyone with good communication skills, a sense of humor and stick ability could become good foster carers.
