Excessive Use of Sunless Tanning Products Can Invite Skin Cancer

The Archives of Dermatology has recently published a report, revealing that young women who use tanning products are not much into natural tanning and saloons tanning packages. Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta research said young women who use more tanning lotions and creams do not go for sun bathing or to tanning salons in routine.

Researcher Rachel E. Sahn said there is great trend of these sunless tanning products but still, its efficacy is unknown. Some researchers are of the view that these sunless tanning products are as good as sunbathing or tanning beds, while other researchers severely criticize by saying that it is not that effective.

In order to reach the conclusion, they conducted an experiment in which they enrolled 415 young women who were at least 18 years old. The main aim to conduct the survey was to know that how many women, among the enrolled candidates, use sunless tanning products and what they think about other sunbathing treatments.

It was found that 53.6% girls from 18 to 25 years age group has used sunless tanning products, 40.7% of women from 26 to 40 years have applied, and 41.4% women who were more than 40 years have used it.

There were some who were of the view that they use sun bathing as well as tanning beds. Women who earlier used to have intentional sunbathing now have switched to sunless tanning products. Not only this, but salons have also revealed that the use of such lotions and creams have severely affected their tanning bed business.

Researchers said there is no problem in using these products for once in a while but not for regular purpose, as they pose risk to health. They further affirmed, “As the appearance of sunless tanning product tans continues to be improved, [the products] carry the potential to further decrease intentional UV radiation exposure and, subsequently, the risk of [UV-related] skin cancer”.
