It is important for sinus sufferers to maintain hygiene while using Neti Pot, as it has been informed that by using tap water or unclean pot, a person’s life could be put into danger. The health officials have recently launched warnings for Neti Pot users as two people have been reported of succumbing to death after using tap water in Neti Pot.

Neti Pots are used by sinus sufferers for rinsing clogged nose by tilting head lightly on the Pot and by pouring the water into one of the nostrils. This process helps in removing sinus cavity. The health officials have advised that people should use sterile water so that infection caused by the tap water could be prevented.

The medical experts are fearful that by using tap water, people might be putting their life into danger as they have increased chances of being affected with amoeba. People going for swimming in warm, shallow lakes and rivers are also at increased risk of being affected with amoeba.

It has been reported that a woman and man from De Soto Parish and from St. Bernard Parish have succumbed to death after coming in contact with brain eating amoeba. Dr. Raoult Ratard from Louisiana State Epidemiologist said, “If you are irrigating, flushing or rinsing your sinuses, for example, by using a Neti pot, use distilled, sterile or previously boiled water to make up the irrigation solution”.

It has been informed that once amoeba enters in the brain, it starts eating the neurons. In the last ten years, about 32 such cases have been reported. It is advisable that the users of Neti Pot should use it carefully as any negligence on their part could put their life in trouble.
