Is New York The City of Longevity?

Amid all gloom pertaining to the financial crisis, it is being said that life expectancy of New Yorkers is rising. It has been reported by Mayor Michael Bloomberg that the life expectancy for 40-year-olds in New York has jumped to 82 from 2000 to 2009, while that of a newborn, it has gone up by three years in 2000 to 80.6 years in 2009.

This is told to have happened after accounting factors like anti-smoking campaign and other programs related with HIV. There has been significant attention paid to the levels of medical treatment being given to New Yorkers, and that is what has brought out the results now.

There has been drop of 50% in mortality rate related to HIV since 2002. However, the concerned authorities are taking steps to tackle the issue. Even it was told that the city's infant mortality rate had dropped to a low of 4.9 deaths per 1,000 births last year which is told to be a commendable achievement so far.

"If you have friends and relatives who you care about and they live elsewhere, on average, if they move to New York City, they will live longer", said the founder and majority owner of Bloomberg News parent Bloomberg LP, while talking to media personals in a news conference at a maternity ward of Bronx hospital.

It has been told in a report that there has been significant improvement made on this front and that is what has offered healthy life to those who are born in New York unlike those living in many other parts of America.

However, there are still rising number of cases of heart disease, cancer, influenza, pneumonia that have made this report look satisfactory only. There is a lot to do for the New York City before being called the best among all.
