It has been recently revealed that the Food and Drug Administration has recently approved the use of Prevnar, 13, from Pfizer. This drug is meant for treating pneumococcal conjugat, for the prevention of pneumonia.
It has now been recommended that the drug might be used for a single dose for adults more than 50 years of age. The firm is of the view that the disease could be fought fairly well, with the use of the drug, and will be very beneficial for the sufferers.
There have been Phase 3 trials already conducted to monitor the authenticity of the drug. It is however going to be used for the treatment of disease symptoms in people above the age of 50 years.
There were also positive responses seen in those cases, in which there had already been vaccination received by the patients.
The drug is formed for fighting bacteria called Streptococcus pneumonia, and this might probably be able to bring down the levels of the disease. The disease is a major killer in adults above the age of 50 years and there is dire need for people to prevent the same with effective medicines.
The FDA further revealed that there are as many as 300, 000 people merely from the USA, who are admitted to hospital due to pneumococcal pneumonia.
"Pneumococcal disease is a substantial cause of illness and death,". "Today's approval provides an additional vaccine for preventing pneumococcal pneumonia and invasive disease in this age group", revealed Dr. Karen Midthun, the director of the FDA center for Biological Evaluation and Research.
It's a matter of time to see how well the drug is accepted for use, and how effective it proves to be in the time to come.
