India Celebrating Its Victory Over Polio

There was a time when India was finding it hard to fight the strains of polio. But now, it’s been almost one year when no polio case has been registered. The achievement is good for the growth of the country. It means that the people have become aware as to how they can prevent their kids from being affected with polio.

In 1985, there were about 150,000 cases polio. However, now the country has not been able to find a single case of polio for past 12 months. A year back, an 18 years old girl was found to be affected with the disease. The girl is said to hail from eastern state of West Bengal.

There are about four countries Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria and India, where polio is still an official endemic. If no case of polio is registered in the country in the month of January then it would be freed from the list.

Recently, Niger and Egypt were declared to be free from polio by the World Health Organisation. However, the health workers of Delhi have cautioned that the polio can return and make children paralyzed. However, at the same they are happy over the country achievement in eradicating the deadly disease.

It has been informed that last year about 900 million doses of polio were delivered by 2.3 million vaccinators, all over the country. The Head of the polio unit at UN children's agency UNICEF, Lieven Desomer, was reported as saying, “What India has achieved is reaching a first milestone in a very important process. It's not the end of the road, but it's something to be very proud of… If it can be done here, it can be done everywhere”. It is hoped that country would be able to overcome other deadly diseases like HIV and cancer.
