It has been recently revealed that the British American Tobacco is using the health lifestyle icon of Australia, the kangaroo on their cigarette pack to promote their tobacco products. Australia is not amused by this act and has asked the company to change the logo.
The Attorney General, Nicola Roxon, informed that their Winfield brand has their logo in front as well as their country’s map with a tag saying that is Australians favorite brand. It seems it is an answer from BAT to the Australian authorities for calling plain packaging.
Roxon said, "I think many Australians are going to be outraged that a big tobacco company all the way round the world is using Australia's healthy lifestyle to market their deadly products”.
Claiming the things which do not exist in reality would not affect them, she said and also affirmed that this act of them has shown the level they belong to. She is sure that when Australians would get to know about it then they would surely criticize them.
A kangaroo as a symbol is associated with a healthy lifestyle of Australia. But the way it is being used by BAT is quite offensive. Roxon said that their country’s logo is being used on BAT cigarette packs and is being sold in the European markets. It is something on which they cannot take action, but could only ask them to get off from their icon.
Despite that Australia is the first country across the globe which has called for plain packaging. Tobacco products would be available in plain olive brown color with no logo on both sides of the packet.
Both sides of the pack would be having graphic warnings that would be issued by the Department of Health. Banning of using logos and any other promotional stuff has led the major tobacco companies to file a law suit in the High Court against the government.
