Computer Exergames Contribute to Cognitive Improvement in Aged

A recent report has revealed that computer exercise games provide as much beneficial for old people as exercises, says a team of researchers from the Union College, New York. They have found in their latest study that exercise work-out computer games provide the people above 50 a healthier physique and brain as well.

The researchers conducted an analysis on cyber cycle in which hundreds of volunteers between 58 to 99 years of age were enrolled. These participants had indoor access to an exercise bike. Initial evaluations and training was completed by some and they rode the bikes.

However, the experimental bike was equipped with virtual reality display. The team told that some of them were given 3D tours and they raced against a ghost rider whereas others cycled the laid back machine.

After their study, they assessed cognitive power of the participants after one month, including working memory, problem solving and planning. Also, blood plasma was tested so as to measure whether or not a change in BDNF i. e. brain-derived neurotrophic growth factor indicated neuroplasticity. They then led to the conclusion that those who were given games while ride, had better executive function as compared to those riding simple stationary bike.

Further, the team told that computer exergames help the players to protect themselves from mild cognitive impairment such as decision making ability and problem solving. Wii fit, which is one of the exergames, provides extra cognitive benefits to the players old in age than simple traditional physical exercises by combining exercise with interactive video game feature and reality environments.

The study also revealed that exergames are helpful in preventing dementia. It could even shift the attention of the players from negative aspects towards positive and inspirational ones like competition and three-dimensional scenery, making them healthy people.
