It has been recently revealed by the Obama administration that in the time to come, the pharmaceutical companies shall have to reveal what amount they are giving to doctors for the purpose of research and development of the drugs. Besides this, they shall also have to give a note on the expenses they pay for the travel, speaking and entertainment done by the doctors.
Researchers are of the view that these splurges being made on them might tend to influence the doctors and tend to make them inclined towards incurring more costs for treatments, and also making the drugs to be costlier than their actual prices.
There are many doctors who tend to receive free trips and other benefits for their work. This might tend to change the pricing strategies for drugs and the brunt of it might have to be borne by patients.
It was reported by New York Times that many doctors take cash payments for their new medical findings, whereas others opt for benefits such as gift cards including lunch for members and so on.
The Obama Administration is of the view that there are still many firms to be audited before a final verdict can be given on the matter.
It is however most likely that the rest of the firms shall also give such results that would incline the government towards staying on their decision.
“Patients want to know they are getting treatment based on medical evidence, not a lunch or a financial relationship. They want to know if their doctor has a financial relationship with a pharmaceutical company, but are uncomfortable asking the doctor directly”, said Allan J. Coukell, consumer advocate from the Pew Charitable Trusts.
