It has been recently revealed that the drug firms, Mediation and Pfizer, have called it quits in the clinical testing for the drug dimebon. This was the crucial testing stage for the drug, and the firms deeming it useless, have done away with it.
The drug was previously being developed by both these companies in collaboration and they have now stopped all their efforts towards the clinical trial of the drug. This is because the drug hasn’t been able to prove its worth recently. It was being developed for the efficient treatment for Alzheimer’s disease in the mild and moderate levels.
The firms are even cancelling the open-label extension study, which had been launched to be done after the basic trial. This had included 1003 patients, picked on random, who were to be registered for the drug for a period of a year.
It was many years ago that this drug had originated in Russia, where it was even used for the treatment of nasal congestion in the form of an antihistamine. This is where the scientists had figured that the drug is seemingly having benefits in patients suffering from Alzheimer’s as well. It was now found that the drug had only limited benefits, and the side effects were probably more than the benefits. This is why the trial for the drug has been stopped and the major breakthrough, which was being waited for in this field, is put on hold for now.
Many people across the world are suffering from Alzheimer’s and there are thousands of others waiting in a constant fear of developing the disease. This is why it is essential that an effective cure can be found for the degenerative disease. There is need for a treatment that actually cures the disease and not just slows down its effects.
