Unsafe Abortions Taking Its Toll in India

For long, India has been under controversy over having a large population and now it has been alleged that about 66% of the abortion cases conducted in the country are done in an unsafe manner, which puts the life of a woman under threat.

It has been reported that in 2008, about 6.5 million abortions took place in the country. Out of these cases, 66% were alleged to be medically unsafe. It has further been revealed that about 10.5 million abortion cases took place all over the Asia.

The figures have been revealed by the World Health Organization. In India, out of one lakh abortions, 200 women succumbed to death because of unsafe abortion procedures. An article published in the journal "The Lancet" has revealed that in 2008 there were 2.2 million more cases of abortion as compared to that of 2003.

It has been found that all over the world the incidences of abortion have increased significantly. The scenario in the developing countries is worse as compared to that of developed countries. The demand of abortion increases mainly because of unsafe sex and unwanted pregnancies.

While commenting on the increased cases of abortion in India, Dr. Gilda Sedgh from the Guttmacher Institute said, "Abortion is legal in India and the services are much safer that many other developing countries. But for some reason, women choosing to abort are not taking advantage of this liberal law. They are also getting abortions done in unsafe clinics."

Dr. Gilda Sedgh has emphasized that the family planning programs should be given priority in countries like India. People are required to be made aware about the contraceptive pills and other methods like condoms which can prevent unwanted pregnancy. Moreover, they should also be made aware of the dire consequences of going though an unsafe abortion.
