In what may well turn out to be a godsend for myriad cancer patients all over the word, a recently concluded study, which was carried out by researchers from the USC Keck School of Medicine, has revealed that a drug named regorafenib, which is mainly used for patients going through advanced stages of colorectal cancer and have already drained out all other alternatives for getting rid of potentially cancer, may well turn out to be of immense help for slowing down the progression of tumor and can therefore extend their lifespan.
The manufacturer of regorafenib, Bayer HealthCare, claimed that it would be keenly focused on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for gaining a green light for its medication at earliest.
The drugmaker was of the opinion that the drug called “regorafenib”, if sanctioned by the FDA, will be certainly designated as the first ever treatment for colorectal cancer since the last five years or so.
While expressing his opinion regarding the findings of the study, the lead author of the study, Prof. Lenz said that, “I think this is a new tool in the armamentarium for patients with this disease. In colon cancers, we've seen significant changes. Patients who have been treated for years are in good shape, and when they fail one treatment they demand more treatment”.
Though chemotherapy and various other medications are highly effective in providing an extension in the lifespan of people suffering from metastatic cancer, a severe form of cancer that has invaded all over the body of patient, there’s still a dire need for finding some effective substitutes in case the standard drugs fail to prove their worth.
The findings of the study, which went through a three different phases, are based on data gathered by the three recent studies that included more than 760 patients suffering from metastasized colorectal cancer.
