It has been recently revealed according to a new research conducted by a team from the Massachusetts University that when most things seem to fail in helping to forget their sorrows and unpleasant memories, then sleep might help.
It was further added that when one has witnessed a traumatizing incident, it is best to sleep it off, which will substantially lessen the pain and shock. The study, which has been published in ‘The Neuroscience’, was of the view that the people who slept soon after their experience would find it easier to be able to get over with it, than the ones who were awake, and were actually giving their minds a chance to recollect and register the horror properly.
"Our findings have significance for people with post-traumatic stress disorder, for example, or those asked to give eye-witness testimony in court cases. It is common to be sleep-deprived after witnessing a traumatic scene, almost as if your brain doesn't want to sleep on it”, said neuroscientist Rebecca Spencer.
For the same, there were 106 people who were studied. The researchers from Canterbury, which was recently struck by earthquakes, are of the view that negative encounters might tend to bring back the past sad memories as well. It is essential that people understand this and make their brain relax, consciously. They need to go off to sleep for a while, and when they wake up, they can probably rationalize things better.
It was found in the study that the contestants who slept after a traumatic experience were able to fight the situation better, while the others seemed to be dealing with their mental blocks, without a break, and they weren’t doing better. This needs to be incorporated in the one of the ways of managing stress.
