Recently, the government has been raising concern over the potential of the dangerous strain of bird flu, recently created in laboratories, to be misused. However, the scientists who had been involved in the experiment have said that the there is least possibility of the findings to be misused and, therefore, it should not be censored.
Yoshihiro Kawaoka from the universities of Tokyo and Wisconsin Madison is of the view that veiling the information about the experiment would hinder the progress of finding a cure for the deadly bird flu.
Yoshihiro Kawaoka is one of those researchers who were involved in creating the dangerous strain of bird flu. The experiment by the researchers has astonished the whole world. However, the leading scientists of the US are of the view that the findings might be misused by the terrorist and therefore any further research over it should be hindered.
But it is completely unacceptable by the researchers. While commenting upon the unacceptable fears of the researchers of the US, Kawaoka said, "I counter that H5N1 viruses circulating in nature already pose a threat. Because H5N1 mutations that confer transmissibility in mammals may emerge in nature, I believe that it would be irresponsible not to study the underlying mechanisms".
He further warned the by not disclosing the findings of the research or experiment, the authorities can't hinder the terrorist from developing the hazardous and deadliest strain of H5N1 (bird flu). The remarks by Kawaoka hold ground and therefore it is being proposed that the study over the H5N1 should be continued.
Any hindrance the research wouldn't protect the misuse of it. Moreover, the need of the hour is to create an effective treatment for bird flu as no effective treatment is yet available in the clinics.
