As per reports, it has got revealed that a cat weighing more than 20 pounds has become the world's first animal on which feline total knee replacement operation has been performed in the US. Cyrano, the name of cat, was getting treatment for cancer in his left hind leg.
The treatment which was going at Colorado State University has benefitted Cyrano, but has left him with a leg which is nearly useless and is full of pain. In such scenario, there was one option with the owner of Cyrano, who takes his cat as his child. The option was to amputate his leg, but the excessive weight acted as hurdle stone.
They took Cyrano to North Carolina State University where surgeon Denis Marcellin-Little has conducted the world's first surgery to fuse leg implants for an animal in 2005. Since then such surgeries have become quite common for doctors.
However, such kind of surgery was never performed on cats due to their smaller anatomy. Cyrano was the first one to get his complete knee replacement done. Marcellin-Little said that they did not adopt the conventional method and chose to replace her knee with metal powder.
Using the laser procedure, they fabricated the knee and hardened it with metal powder, which would give him firmness. The metal powder exactly replicated his bones. The operation, which lasted for six hours, turned out to be a successful.
Marcellin-Little affirmed that they did not have any difficulties as Cyrano has big bones and girth which helped them during the operation. Cyrano would be up on his legs by next week, but he would not be able to climb on trees or at any elevated period. It would take three months and then he could be allowed to do whatever he feels like.
