Ultrasound Might Make Men Infertile

It has been recently revealed in a new research that if there are ultrasound tests conducted on the testicles of a man, it might tend to result in the stoppage of sperm production in him. The study has been done on rats and was carried out by a team of researchers from the University of North Carolina. It was found by the researchers that in rats, the sperm production seemed to stop, if they had been subjected to an ultrasound.

The study was published in the Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology journal and it was discovered that the sound waves in the ultrasound, might be a reason for this sort of reaction in rats.

This research gave rise to the concept that contraception might be helped with the use of ultrasound. The people might tend to opt for the same to prevent being fertile in the time to come.

The team of researchers was given a huge grant of Bi8ll and Melinda Gates foundation, and they are using it for further development of this theory.

There are tests going to be conducted on humans for the same, before it can be determined if men tend to have the same reaction to ultrasound as mice.

“Unlike humans, rats remain fertile even with extremely low sperm counts. However, our non-invasive ultrasound treatment reduced sperm reserves in rats far below levels normally seen in fertile men”, said Study leader Dr James Tsuruta, from the University of North Carolina.

It was further said that there is need for more tests to be done to find out how long the effects of this measure of contraception shall remain in men. There is need for a safe, effective and long term active male contraceptive, and this research might lead to the same in the near future.
