Apparently, a small fire in a North York apartment building killed a woman and her three-year-old son, Tuesday night, leaving two other women in critical condition.
Fire crews were called to 2460 Weston Rd., at Oak Street just south of Highway 401, at 5:54 p. m. However, the fire in apartment 901 seemed to have been burning for quite some time and by the time the crews arrived the whole apartment had already been engulfed in smoke.
Toronto Fire Services District Chief Stephan Powell said that a small fire in the living room was put out quickly.
Firefighters found three adult women and a young boy, unconscious in a bedroom, suffering from extensive smoke inhalation. All of them were taken to local hospitals without vital signs, where the boy and one woman in her 20s succumbed.
Family members identified them as Schanelle Brown, 22, and son Jahshy Buchanan, 3. Ms. Brown was said to be eight months pregnant.
The officials however smell fish in this case.
"Six o'clock at night. It does not make sense. People would normally be up and be around. It's alarming to me to find that four individuals are [without vital signs] and were taken to hospital . it's unusual," Fire Chief Bill Stewart told CP24.
Parts of the building were evacuated, but residents were allowed back in soon after.
