Typhoid Terror Inspires Prohibition of Fishing Activities in Harare

As per recent reports, it has been revealed that the National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority and the Harare City Council are today likely to outlaw all sorts of fishing activities going on in contaminated dams all over the city.

The move has perhaps been inspired due to fears of typhoid outbreak that have long been looming over the city. The ban will be focused on controlling further outbreak of typhoid that has bothered in excess of 900 people throughout the capital.

It has arrived merely 24 hours after the incident in which police yesterday obstructed a clean-up mission instigated by the residents of Kuwadzana, the region which has been termed as the focal point of the outbreak as reports have confirmed that the typhoid outbreak began from there and thereabout.

During the course of a tour conducted yesterday, Tendai Mahachi, the Harare town clerk, revealed that the parks authority and council have reached the conclusion that fish from the dams were carrying the infection which could have easily resulted in further spread of the outbreak, and therefore the ban has been called for.

Talks are still due with parks authorities for the sake of stopping fishing in the lakes and surroundings, and are likely to take place in a day or two. It has been informed by officials that raw sewage is coming from Chitungwiza directly to the water bodies and it is the most prevalent factor behind causing typhoid.

While expressing his further opinion in this regard, he added: “The main problem here is fish that is being sold at night. Fish coming from heavily contaminated sources and we have to stop that. We should have them tested and all shops found with no health certificates will be stopped from operating”.

He further added that all the shops have to be thoroughly scrutinized and workers need to be tested at earliest.
