Heartburn Medicines Can Lead Women to Hip Fractures

It has been recently revealed in a report that the usually used heart burn pills might be a reason for upping the risk of hip fractures by almost 50%. Scientists are of the view that these medicines might tend to increase the risk of hip displacements, if they are taken a number of times a week. There’s more? The risk is about 50% more for the people who have either been smoking earlier or smoke at present.

These drugs might be prescribed for indigestion, heartburns and stomach acidity problems. Some of these are Zanprol and Omeprazol. The research done by a team from the Harvard Medical School, together with the Massachusetts General Hospital from Boston, concluded that these medicine needs to be taken in controlled limits because they tend to give side effects.

For the same research, there were as many as 80,000 women surveyed, especially the ones who had crossed the stage of menopause. “This is a useful study, that has taken account of the other factors that can affect hip fractures such as smoking, calcium intake, and obesity that has been missing from other studies looking at the link between PPIs and hip fracture”, said Dan Greer, of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. It was further added that obesity might be one of the other reasons for hip displacements, and people should try and maintain a sound body weight in order to keep fit and healthy.

There is a need for further research and development on the matter before there can be a detailed outcome given out about it. The study might be useful in forming better medicines which wouldn’t be so inclined towards causing the risk of hip fractures.
