Statins Have Lots to Offer besides Lowering Cholesterol Level

While one might be having statins from years for protection against heart disease and stroke, there is a lot to offer to patients besides this, reveals a report. It has been found that statins could actually be live saver for many. The study said that statins could reduce cardiovascular events in women and men which could change the course of life in the time to come.

There are a large number of people who are being prescribed the anti-cholesterol drugs. It was told that the team led by William J. Kostis, Ph. D., M. D., from the Harvard Medical School in Boston, has examined records from 18 randomized clinical trials of statins with sex-specific outcomes. It was concluded that those having statins had lower cardiovascular event rate as compared to others who were on low-dose statin, placebo, or usual care.

“Statins decrease cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality in both women and men. The effect on cardiovascular events is present in both primary and secondary prevention trials. Therefore, statin therapy should be used in appropriate patients without regard to sex”, said the team in the Feb. 7 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

It is necessary for one to understand that there is a lot statins can offer. While health experts used to recommend healthy diet and regular exercise to female patients who have no heart concerns, it is being that this study has significantly changed the perception as now women would be getting as much as benefits as men can get through statins.

Though they still have raised hopes, it is being believed that there is lot of research work to be done to make any concrete change in the existing system. Moreover, calls are being made to do more of trials and Meta analysis so that positive change could be made.
