Yet another directive has come in regard of vitamin D in Scotland. This time, there is none another than Scotland's Chief Medical Officer Sir Harry Burns, who have told that vitamin D is necessary for the health of children and expecting mothers. Therefore, pregnant women and children should take vitamin D and make it a part of their daily life.
Burns has written a letter to all the health professionals in Scotland and has asked them to follow his directive. Not only this, as he has also told that they should tell benefits of vitamin D to expecting mothers and parents. So they are able to understand its importance for the development of strong bones.
Vitamin D is especially very vital for expecting mothers as its deficiency can cause rickets in their babies. It is a form of disease which happens due to vitamin D deficiency and it leads to softening of the bones which makes children prone to fractures. Supporting Burns, Linda Suttill, who is a midwife told that vitamin D intake is essential for pregnant ladies as otherwise they could gift their infant rickets.
Informing other health professionals about his directive, Burns told that it is a high time now that doctors should address the problems if vitamin D quite seriously.
He further affirmed, "My colleagues and I are writing a joint letter to health professionals to increase awareness of this important issue, highlighting the fact there are steps that people who may be at risk of vitamin D deficiency, such as pregnant women".
In his letter, he has told all the health professionals about the way they should recommend vitamin D tablets to their patients and telling them about the necessity of its intake in their daily lives.
