An international research over the labeling of food products has found that labeling leaves a lasting impact over the consumers. Acknowledging the findings of the research, the Health Minster James Reilly has asked the fast food suppliers to imposing labeling. He warned if the orders are not carried out then the government would make the labeling legal.
In America, the food labeling has already been legalized. In a survey it was found that the labeling helped the Americans consuming, eat 152 fewer calories in hamburger joints, 73 less calories in sandwich bars and 6pc fewer calories per day.
Together with the Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) Dr. Reilly has asked for public opinion over the food labeling. People of Dublin would be allowed to voice their opinion regarding the food labeling. Moreover, they would also be asked to give suggestions regarding the ways by which the intake of calories could be saved.
Food outlets of Ireland have been asked to make the provision of labeling next to the price index on their menu. In Europe, the population of Irelands is considered to be fattest. The younger ones in Ireland are vulnerable of turning obese.
While expressing concerns over the increased obesity cases in Ireland, Dr. Reilly said, "If we don't tackle this, we will be the very first generation to bury the one after us. This government believes in consultation and compromise and conciliation, but if that fails then the train is leaving the station".
Obesity is a graver issue in many countries. An epidemic of obesity has affected millions of people. In previous studies, obesity has been linked with life threatening diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes. It would be interesting to see as to how the Ireland Government deals with the increased obesity cases.
