It has been reported that yesterday the Revenue Commissioners at Cork Airport detained smuggled tobacco and cigarettes worth _80,000. The information about the smuggled tobacco products was provided by the customs officials.
The cigarette and tobacco products, which have been detained by the officials, carry the brand names of President, Richman and Superking. The tobacco products were seized by the officials from various places.
Two men - one Latvian and one Lithuanian -have been found guilty of smuggling the tobacco products. These two men were travelling in the flight coming from Lanzarote. A yet another Latvian man was found flying in Barcelona flight. The man was found with 5,340 smuggled cigarettes. The court has fined _1,500 to the man for avoiding excise duty.
In the past few months, the cases of smuggling of tobacco products have been on rise, which has made the authorities concerned. It has been informed that today as well a Romanian man was caught red handed with smuggled tobacco product.
As many as 14,340 cigarettes were seized from the Romanian man, who arrived to at Cork airport on a flight from Paris. It has been informed that smuggled products are brought to Cork airport by hiding them in the luggage.
The authorities of the airport keeps a tight check over the activities of the travelers so that smuggled products could be get hold of. Some brands of Tobacco and cigarettes are not allowed in various countries. Still, the tobacco manufacturers try to sell their products in those countries through smuggling. Smuggling is a crime and is punishable by law. A trial over the smuggled products would soon be carried out in which punishment to the culprits would be announced.
