Titanium Jaw Operation Successful

It has been revealed recently in a report that a woman, aged 83, has recently had a jaw replacement surgery. In this surgery there has been the replacement of her infected jaw with one that was created using a 3D model that was created by a printer.

It was said that the doctors wanted to avoid the traditional reconstructive surgery for her because she was aged and the infection was also quiet extensive. It was in June last year in Netherlands that the surgery was carried out.

It was the lower jaw in question and there was a replacement created with the help of titanium dust layer. It was the first ever operation of its kind and it was completely successful. This shall mean there might be many more similar surgeries that the world might see in the time to come, and it would help many people suffering from infections as well as jaw dislocations due to accidents and so on.

The artificial jaw was made by a firm from Belgium, called Layer Wise. The construction was helped by a number of scientists from the University of Hasselt. The woman was suffering from osteomyelitis, which is an infection of the bones. This condition gave rise to a novel procedure of treatment, which can be considered a breakthrough in the field of treatment for broken jaws and dislocated bones in the time to come.

There was the se of high-precision laser, which was used for bringing together the titanium powder, without the use of any sort of binder or glue.

"The implant integrates multiple functions, including dimples increasing the surface area, cavities promoting muscle attachment, and sleeves to lead mandible nerves", revealed Professor Jules Poukens of the University of Hasselt.
