Objectionable Online Content Making Parents Wary

There is no doubt left that internet use is gripping the attention of one and all, there seems to be lingering fear among the parents about the impact of content their kids are exposed to day in and out.

The assumption that kids refer to wide horde of websites for educational purposes is a passé. Now, the time has changed and so is the popular perception as internet has become more or less a source of communication for many. Nonetheless, there is a need to keep a check on the content being posted.

On the same lines, a survey was conducted by the National Parents Council Primary and the National Centre for Technology in Education. It showed that as many as 83% parents are wary of the kind of stuff being posted on the websites, while another 655 find it unsafe for the kids while they share their personal stuff with almost strangers, and another 60% think that there would be as many as 60% who feel that their kids would become violent while watching such videos online.

While the survey has once again affirmed the risk attached with benefits, it would be worth seeing how parents manage the issue at their end. Another research on the same has revealed that contrary to European parents, Irish parents are more restrictive towards what their kids do on internet. Disciplining or imposing unreasonable restrictions could change the course of relation, there is need for managing the issue with empathy. Parents must understand the actually needs of their children before making any decision.

The findings were being shown on Safer Internet Day yesterday to make people aware about what all is happening around. There is need for effective programmes to be launched to make parents learn ways and means to handle the issue.
