Wal-Mart Introduces Green Icon for Healthy Food Products

Wal-Mart, which is the largest food seller in the US, has long been aiming at promotion of nutritive foods as well as increasing the nutritive value of foods, says a recent report. It has been revealed in a report that it would soon be providing healthy foods with a green colored icon.

It has been uncovered by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. that after one year of its opening in the nation, it is now thinking of encouraging healthy house-brand foods amongst people. The initiative being taken by the company is due to the problem of obesity seen in young children, which is the consequence of their poor eating habits.

However, health standards are being set by the FDA regarding health claims to be made on food items. But according to Wal-Mart, customers need to have information about each food item so that they may make the right choice of what to eat and what not. It has been largely found that adults as well as children eat what they like, irrespective of the harms that some foods can cause.

Thus, it has been decided by the retailer to add a green and white coloured icon on packaging of nutritive and healthier products, which would be reading “Great for you”. It would represent a stylized outline of a human with arms spread towards the sky. As per the report, the icon would begin to appear on food packages from this spring. Though it has not been thought of how many products would contain the nutritional seal, Wal-Mart is already selling some healthy foods that are in line with the seal.

As per the findings, the icon would help people to ascertain instantly which chows are worth purchasing. “It helps customers see very, very quickly what healthier choices are for them”, remarked Andrea Thomas, Senior Vice-President of Sustainability for Wal-Mart Stores.
